Hello stamping friend! I’m here today to share a fun galaxy sky with you, for another Valentine’s theme card. Or it could be for an anniversary, or just because, for a loved one! I again chose the Upon a Star stamp set and matching dies from Lawn Fawn. I just love the foxes & bunnies in this set. Plus, the theme of the set lends itself perfectly for a galaxy sky!
WRITTEN IN THE STARS
As I’m writing this post, it’s Sunday Jan. 20th, and tonight is the night of the Super Wolf Blood Moon, as well as a Lunar Eclipse. That’s quite the big event, celestially speaking! If you’d like to read more about this event, here’s a LINK to an article in our local paper – of course, it’s written before the event). And, as I look out my window (right next to my computer, so I can multitask) I can see strips of purple, orange and yellow, as the sun is setting (it’s just past 5 pm, PST). The perfect time to be writing and sharing a galaxy sky card with you!
How’s this for some gorgeous colours? Seeing the Aurora Borealis in person is on my bucket list, but this will have to do for now.
Creating a galaxy sky is fun! When you first start, it looks like a hot mess, but once you’ve done your blending, it looks great.
Start with a panel of white cardstock. Mask off the bottom area for your grass, and choose your inks. I used Salty Ocean, Mustard Seed and Seedless Preserves Distress Inks, and SU! Blueberry Bushel for the sky. Add one colour at a time randomly to the sky area, with your blending tool. For all the colours I used my Life Changing Blender Brushes, but then I used a Mini Ink Blender for the SU! Blueberry Bushel ink. There, I ran into a bit of a problem. Now, this problem could be unique to me, or perhaps you’ve had it happen to you as well. I find that the blending foams kind of ‘stutter’ on the paper, leaving heavy marks and circles; unlike the brushes, which seem to glide more evenly across the paper. I guess that’s why they’re called ‘Life Changing Blender Brushes’!
Anyway -once you’re happy with blending the colours, go back and blend them a bit more. Trust me! Then, add some stars to the sky. To create the stars, I took some white craft ink, and placed it on one of my Clear Blocks. I added some water, and stirred it up with a small paintbrush. Next, load the brush with some of the watered-down paint, and flick it onto the blended sky. Keep doing this until you’re happy with your starry sky! You can also flick just plain water, which will react with the Distress Ink and leave lighter marks.
ADD THE GRASS, SENTIMENT & HEART CONSTELLATION
Now, lift your mask from the grass area, and mask off your beautiful sky. Blend on Pine Needles and Mowed Lawn Distress Inks to the bottom half, to create your grassy area. (I may have added some Shabby Shutters, but I can’t remember!).
Once you’re finished with the grass, remove the mask, and stamp the sentiment from the Upon a Sky stamp set in Versamark ink at the bottom. Cover with white embossing powder, and heat set. Repeat the same with the heart-shaped star constellation, in the sky.
Now, you get to have fun colouring the critters! Stamp the large & small foxes, plus the large & small rabbits in Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto white cardstock. Use your favourite medium to colour them. I used SU! Blends alcohol markers for my colouring. Light & Dark Smoky Slate for the rabbits, with Melon Mambo pink for their noses (hard to see those, though). For the foxes, I chose Cherry Cobbler Light and Calypso Coral LIght, for a nice reddish-orange colour.
After colouring, use the Big Shot with the matching Upon a Star dies to die cut the animals. Attach them to the front panel with foam squares. Next, attach the front panel to a panel of black cardstock with foam tape, and then to a cardstock base of SU! Blueberry Bushel cardstock.
I’m really happy with how this turned out! With more practice, I’ll be able to avoid making those heavy marks with the blending foam applicators. And I will be creating more galaxy skies – they’re a lot of fun to do! Let me know what you think, and if you’ve created this type of sky before. I always love reading your comments!
