IS IT BEACH WEATHER YET?

That’s a hopeful thought, isn’t it?! It certainly isn’t beach weather yet around here, although the weather report predict sunshine and up to 18 Celcius over the next week! I’ll certainly visit the beach at those temps, but keep in mind the heat from the sun won’t be quite as hot!

Just to help remind you that summer will (eventually) be here, I’m sharing a gorgeous beach scene card with you. I’m using the Hero Arts Color Layering Waves stamp set, along with some masking and sponging.

HELLO FROM THE BEACH!

This card is only 1 layer (minus the coloured cardstock), but it looks like much more! That’s one of the reasons why I love layering stamps so much. You get so much dimension, without adding physical layers.

Wouldn’t you just love to be there right now? One of the sentiments in this stamp set says “life is better with sandy feet” – sounds good to me!

COLOURING DETAILS

Yes, I do switch between the spellings of the words colour/color and colouring! That’s because I’m Canadian – I spell it the proper way! But the trademark name of the stamp set is from the U.S., which is spelled without the ‘u’ in the word. Gotta respect those trademarks, people!

Anyway – there are 3 different layer stamps for the water itself. First, start with the solid background colour, which will be the lightest. Next is the medium colour, adding in some waves and textures, and finally the darkest, for the deepest waves. The colours I used are Broken China, Peacock Feathers and Blueprint Sketch Distress Oxide inks.

After stamping the water, use a Tim Holtz ink blending tool, and add the sand.  I used my SU! Crumb Cake ink pad, for just the right colour. Next, use the hello stamp from the Color Layering Waves set and stamp it in a darker brown, onto the sand. Using a darker ink gives it the impression of depth and wetter sand; just like you’d get when you write in the sand.

Now you want to mask off your water. I used the Post-it Labeling & masking tape. Then I gathered my inks to create the sky. Starting from lightest to darkest, blend Mustard Seed, Spiced Marmalade and Abandoned Coral Distress inks above the water, for a beautiful setting sun impression.

Finally, add some more interest by adding some birds in the sky! I stamped in a dark gray ink the birds from the SU! set called High Tide.

PUT IT TOGETHER

Layer your image panel onto a large one of light aqua colour, with foam tape or squares. Attach these panels to a card base of a darker teal or aqua colour.  That’s it – you’re done!

I really like how this card turned out! I’m going to make another one, but adding even more dimension. I have some great texture embossing powders, but I’m waiting to show you until I can share something else. I recently participated in an ATC swap. ATC stands for Artist Trading Coins, and our theme was ‘spring break beach weather’.  This card would go very well with the coins I created. But, although we’ve all sent our coins in, we’re waiting to receive our swaps back. Once I get mine, I’ll share them with you!

I've always liked to create things, but I'm not a great artist, or sculptor, or any type of 'traditional' artist - but I love to stamp and create! I love the satisfaction of a completed project. Whether a 3D item, or a card, or scrapbook page - as long as it can create a smile, evoke a feeling, or some type of reaction in the recipient. I hope you will enjoy sharing my creations, and occasional ramblings; I'd enjoy having you stamp and create with me! :)
