I was just thinking that usually, our first mistake in a new year is writing the old year by accident. Of course, in these days of computers, online banking and such, we don’t actually ‘write’ the year often anymore, do we? I guess that will mean 1 less mistake to make this year! In mid December, I received the My Monthly Hero December 2019 kit from Hero Arts. Unfortunately, I was still in the throes of getting holiday cards done, and didn’t have time to play with it! Well, it’s a new month as well as year, so I’ve made my first card with this kit.
MY MONTHLY HERO KITS
I’m always in awe of how much value is packed into these monthly kits! You really do get the most bang for your buck. The stamp set itself has 7 sentiments and 20 images, varying in size. You also get an 18 piece coordinating die set, an Earth palette Reactive ink pad, 5 mini brushes and a 0.5oz Green Eco Glitter. What I’m most surprised about is the fact that this kit hasn’t sold out yet! To get your kit, CLICK HERE, or on the kit image below – before they do sell out! (I’m thinking everyone was distracted over the holidays, but they’ll shop now!).
AN ABUNDANCE OF HAPPINESS
What I love about this kit is that it’s focused on the earth – which is how we all should be, at this time. We need to take better care of our planet, and ourselves. To be better people, both towards others, and to ourselves. The sentiments in the December MMH Kit focus on the earth, as well as each other. A winner all ’round, I’d say. And how about that Eco glitter! It’s ‘cosmetic grade’, which means it’s not harmful to people or the earth, and is biodegradable. As much as I love glitter, the regular kind is going to be around long after we’re gone!
So for today’s card, I’ve chosen my focus to be the earth, with my wish for you this year – an abundance of happiness.
Gorgeous colours, aren’t they?
In hindsight (which is usually 20/20, if I may throw in a ‘new year’ pun) I should have used watercolour paper – but I didn’t! To create the background, cut a piece of white cardstock (or watercolour paper). Spray the paper with water, front & back to reduce warping. Drag the Earth Palette Reactive Ink pad down the length of the paper, and then lightly go over the ink with a wet paint brush. I didn’t worry too much about the areas that the ink pad skipped over – it gives it a nice, organic look. Set this aside to dry, or if you’re impatient like me, dry it with a heat tool.
On a separate piece of white cardstock, stamp the hands and world images in Nocturne ink. Cover with clear embossing powder, and heat set. Use alcohol markers to colour the image. Or, you can use the small brushes in the kit & watercolour them with the reactive inks. These inks are made specifically to react with water, so they’re perfect for watercolouring. After colouring, use the coordinating dies in the Kit to die cut each image.
Set up the inked panel in your MISTI, or other stamp platform. Align the sentiment stamp in the bottom middle of the panel, and stamp in Versamark ink. Repeat the inking & stamping, to ensure good coverage. Cover the sentiment with gold embossing powder, and heat set.
LAYER IT TOGETHER
To add dimension to the die cuts, repeat the die cutting, this time from white fun foam, and attach it to the back of the die cut images. Next, attach them with double-sided adhesive tape above the sentiment, with the hands on each side of the world.
Cut a piece of fun foam slightly smaller than your background panel, and attach it to the back. Next, attach it to a panel of gold metallic cardstock, and then to a dark green card base.
Using the die cut fun foam for backing, instead of foam tape or squares gives a nice, even support for the images. And yes, as you can see above, I was impatient and my inked panel is a *bit* warped!
There are loads of extra add-on’s to this Kit, as there are every month. Be sure to check them out, and pick some of them up! I hope you’ve been inspired to try out the Hero Arts My Monthly Hero Kits, and have some fun experimenting. These supplies go a long way! In the meantime, be happy, be kind to yourself, your neighbour, and the world.
