Trust Yourself. She Will Listen.

Every once in a while, a sentiment in a stamp set will resonate with me. This one, ‘Trust Yourself. She Will Listen’ is one of those. I always try to listen to my ‘gut’ instinct – that first reaction that you feel not with your head, but an instinctual, automatic response.  However, being a Libra, I  compulsively have to review every side of every thought, argument, decision…but I do usually come back to that first reaction!

SPARKLY WATER COLOURED DRAGONFLIES

Dragonflies are kind of like mystical creatures, don’t you think? I love images of them – they’re always so ‘other-worldly’ and ethereal. Kind of like that gut instinct – you can’t pin it down, but it’s there. In real life, the shimmer of colours on their wings is gorgeous. I tried to capture at least some of that sparkle on these dragonflies.

Trust Yourself. She Will Listen.

Nuvo Glimmer Paste in Moonstone is my new favourite go-to when I need sparkle & shine! The fact that it’s translucent means you can still see your colours, through the sparkle.

CARD DETAILS

First create your background, to give it time to dry. Cut a panel of watercolour paper, and tape it to a board. This will help avoid warping, when it is wet. I use Thermo Web Purple Tape for this. First, apply a heavy wash of clear water. Next, in your palette, pick up Cerulean Blue paint, and apply it in a wash on the top half of the panel. Keep your colour darker at the top, adding more water to lighten in towards the middle. Next, clean your brush, and apply a wash of Phthalo Green BS to the bottom half of the panel; again lightening the colour towards the middle. I use Daniel Smith watercolour paints, with Silver Black Velvet watercolour brushes.  Set aside this panel to dry, while you work on your dragonflies.

Use the Stampin’ Up! Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits with your die cutting machine. Die cut 1 set of dragonflies from watercolour paper, and a 2nd set from regular white cardstock. Use your watercolours to paint the 1st set of dragonflies. The DS colours I chose are Hansa Yellow Medium, Pyrrol Scarlet, and Burnt Sienna. When your dragonflies are dry, use a small palette knife, and apply a thin coating of Nuvo Glimmer Paste in Moonstone over them.  While this is drying, remove the tape from your watercolour panel, and set it up  in your stamp platform, like a MISTI.

Stamp the sentiment from the Picket Fence Studios Exhale Worry stamp set in Versafine Clair Nocturne ink. Because the watercolour panel is textured, you may need to stamp twice. Next, cover the sentiment with clear embossing powder, and heat set it.  Now you can stack and glue your 2 layers of dragonflies together, and attach them to your panel. Attach it to your card base, and you’re done!

Trust Yourself. She Will Listen.

I use cut-down foam tape to attach my dragonflies, for a bit more dimension. I don’t mind the slight bleed of paint beneath the tape; it adds to the authentic look of the watercolour.

TRUST YOURSELF

I wasn’t sure about these dragonflies, at first, after  painting them. But – I decided to trust myself, and go with it! I do have another idea for a different version of this card, so you may see that soon! I hope that you’ll trust yourself when it comes to your creative instinct – and have fun! Experiment, use your favourite colours, and never wait until you feel something is ‘perfect’.  Trust yourself – she will listen.

I've always liked to create things, but I'm not a great artist, or sculptor, or any type of 'traditional' artist - but I love to stamp and create! I love the satisfaction of a completed project. Whether a 3D item, or a card, or scrapbook page - as long as it can create a smile, evoke a feeling, or some type of reaction in the recipient. I hope you will enjoy sharing my creations, and occasional ramblings; I'd enjoy having you stamp and create with me! :)

I love to read what you have to say! Thanks for commenting ;)
